Come Together Series SS22: Save Our Bryde's Whale
Bryde’s whales are New Zealand’s forgotten whale.
Within New Zealand they have a resident population within the Hauraki Gulf – an area which has been identified as important for feeding & calving, therefore their survival. The Gulf is also unique as it is one of only three regions worldwide where Bryde’s whales are found year round.
However, Bryde’s whales are threatened by extinction, with only 135 whales remaining and being classified as one of four Nationally Critical marine mammal species in New Zealand (the same threat classification as Māuis dolphins).
WWF-NZ recognised the need to increase our awareness of the Bryde’s whale to ensure their continued presence in our waters. More research is needed to assess if the population is continuing to decline so we can better protect them for years to come.
